An Alabama whitewater festival, formerly the NAWFest (Northern Alabama Whitewater Festival) has expanded to include climbing and mtn biking as well and is now the Alabama Mountain Games.
For more info about schedules, event locations, directions, and to register, go to www.nawfest.com .
On Thursday morning the Huck Jam starts. Competitors will have 2 1/2 hours to throw their best moves off Short Creek Falls (15-18 feet tall). The open jam format allows as many runs as time allows. What's great is that the event organizers have created an open category to include riverboards, stand up paddle boards, inflatable pool tools, even if someone wants to swim it in just their pfd and helmet (basically anything that isn't a boat).
After a half hour break for lunch, the boatercross starts. Riverboarders will be competing alongside boaters in this event. The heats start above the falls. After going over the falls, racers must go around a buoy, then go behind the falls and ferry behind the falls to the other shore before sprinting the last leg through the finish line. Both Thursday day whitewater events will be at Short Creek Falls near Hustleville, AL.
The festival grounds, camping, and the other events on Friday and Saturday will take place at Boogie Bottoms, King's Crossing near Nectar, AL one of the forks of the Warrior River.
On Friday morning and afternoon, there will be two different freestyle events with different rules and formats. Boarders will compete in the same categories as boaters. These events will be at holes on either the Locust or Mulburry Forks of the Warrior River, so the competitors meeting is very early and then they decide on a spot and shuttle out to it.
Friday night there will be fun games and live music.
Saturday morning is Slalom.
Saturday night is more music and games and the awards.
Sunday, all events are finished, but there are climbing demos and clean up for those that are able and wish to volunteer with cleaning up.
