Riverboarding During Zoo Hours on the Upper Gauley

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 2:50pm 6 Comments

This year at Gauley fest, a few friends and I decided that we were going to hit the upper section on Saturday. Due to either doing novice trips on the lower section or demos on the New river during previous years, I had never gotten to go out on Saturday during fest, but had heard it's a hoot with a big crowd at Pillow Rock and Sweet's Falls.

After setting shuttle, the day started out easy enough. In our group was Jusbyn Lockard, his kayaking friend Alex, and I. Jusbyn was a little… Continue

Red Roofs run ( Watauga River ) trip report.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 3:51am 2 Comments

In mid-September we got a good bit of rain in the North Carolina mountains.  I checked the normal runs on my wish list, but the Madison county runs weren't going yet and no one wanted to go down to the north fork of the French Broad with me.  Finally, later in the morning I corralled a friend who had boarded with me before into checking out the Red Roofs section of the Watauga river.  I had previously run the more difficult gorge section downstream, but have always wanted to pioneer the…

Simple fixes for old school sledges

Posted on August 27, 2011 at 12:32am 0 Comments

I had an old wetsuit that was beyond repair, so I took it and used it to cover the screws and bar in the middle as well as pad out the arm grooves.

1:17:53 My Next Challenge

Posted on May 26, 2010 at 4:34pm 0 Comments

Five digits and two colons. 1 hour, 17 minutes, 53 seconds. This represents the record time in the riverboard class of the Gauley Animal race, set by Gary Pera in 2006. Without a National Championship to contend for this year, I've got my eyes on a different challenge. Racing down the Gauley is one of the hardest challenges I've ever done, as the Animal Race is nine miles of big rapids interspersed with some long pools of flat water. It's about the time when you are breathing steady and getting… Continue

Gauley Fest Upper Gauley Trip Report and Video

Posted on January 18, 2010 at 2:00am 7 Comments

It's that time of year when all of us teamfli members that riverboard get a chance to at least make a dent in our backlog of footage and put together a few more videos while there isn't a lot of riverboarding to be had.

I started the morning off a little groggy from a late night of running the booth at Gauley Fest and from all the noise that happens well into the morning. However, I was excited because Jamie, Jusbyn, and Rochelle were all getting their first… Continue

I didn't go. US Olympic funding got cut, and so the only place available to train was in Park City UT, which didn't have space available for athletes to stay (an athlete's village) like Lake Placid did. It would have cost me a TON to live in Park City during the winter. C'est la vie.

Hmmm, it's going to be great. It looks like such a beautiful country and with so much to do in rivers, the sea and on-land. Trust that you'll have a adventure-filled and safe trip.

Kevin,

I am in the process of setting up a group on Linkedin for whiterwater kayaking. Happy to be hooked up with you on Face Level.

We ran Little River Canyon Saturday - great run and lots of water.

The pic is from Abrams Falls in the Smokeys. Took my Daughter on a hike to see her first waterfall.....she was amazed. Maybe a future riverboarder? Not a waterfall you want to run on a Riverboard due to the rocks and the amount of neck injuries that have happened. The leg is healed and I have been boarding a few times since. Sounds like you have a hell of a trip planned. If you are ever up for skiing/ snowboarding give me a call. Maybe some winter riverboarding?

Usually Beech or Sugar. I am going to be at Sugar this weekend. Anytime you want to go give me a call. In regards to the winterboarding all of the rivers I like to run are going with the amount of rain we have had recently so I am ready anytime. Wanted to come to Columbia but had the family in.....and they are from around Columbia!

Kevin,
You guys put on quite a show taking on Jacob's and Juicer...my kayak expert friends are pretty impressed and I am starting to get several of them interested in riverboarding!!! I have not been riverboarding yet because I decided to take a two month road trip all over the northwest. If you know anyone that I can meet up with let me know! I am saving my money to get into airboarding and then riverboard next spring. Nice to meet you...hope to get back to NC soon.
