Gauley Fest Upper Gauley Trip Report and Video

It's that time of year when all of us teamfli members that riverboard get a chance to at least make a dent in our backlog of footage and put together a few more videos while there isn't a lot of riverboarding to be had.

I started the morning off a little groggy from a late night of running the booth at Gauley Fest and from all the noise that happens well into the morning. However, I was excited because Jamie, Jusbyn, and Rochelle were all getting their first runs on the Upper… Continue

Save the Pigeon

Hi,

This is an urgent plea from a river brother that is very close to the situation as he lives by the Pigeon River in Hartford, TN and works and plays on the river often. I plan to get these emails out as this is a river I'm on a lot too. We'd appreciate all the boarders in the southeast (or anywhere else), but especially in western, NC and Eastern, TN to take part in emailing officials. I would be at the meeting myself if I didn't have to work, but if you can make it that night please do so.… Continue

Team FLI training with Kevin part 2: The Pool

I'll start this week, by saying that when you ask about the best form or technique for swimming, you are going to get a lot of different and maybe conflicting answers. If you are new to swimming, ask your local lifeguard or swim instructor at the pool for a few pointers. Accept pointers from other swimmers and then use your mind and how it feels with your body to decide if you should adopt it into your training routine. For example, sometimes other swimmers ask me why I'm swimming a certain way… Continue

Airboarding at Richmond Hills Park

12.21.09. After 4 days of being stuck in my neighborhood due to the snow and the city of Asheville Public Works' inability to scrape the roads, the temperatures finally climbed high enough to allow me to get my vehicle out. I promptly headed for the buffet at El Chapala and then to Richmond Hills park to try my airboard since there was some real snow.

I would have liked to had gone to Cataloochee Ski Resort (note: they don't currently allow it to the public, but are thinking about it and have g… Continue

Face Level Fitness Training w/ Kevin: Calisthenics 101

What are calisthenics? They are exercises that use your own body weight as resistance. Calisthenics are a great tool for building strength, flexibility, balance, conditioning, and guarding against injury by strengthening stabilizer muscles that support your joints and other muscles. While I have added in working with resistance bands and kettle bands occasionally, calisthenics are one of the biggest parts of my physical training . I even recommend that those who enjoy training with weights incor… Continue

I didn't go. US Olympic funding got cut, and so the only place available to train was in Park City UT, which didn't have space available for athletes to stay (an athlete's village) like Lake Placid did. It would have cost me a TON to live in Park City during the winter. C'est la vie.

Hmmm, it's going to be great. It looks like such a beautiful country and with so much to do in rivers, the sea and on-land. Trust that you'll have a adventure-filled and safe trip.

Kevin,

I am in the process of setting up a group on Linkedin for whiterwater kayaking. Happy to be hooked up with you on Face Level.

The pic is from Abrams Falls in the Smokeys. Took my Daughter on a hike to see her first waterfall.....she was amazed. Maybe a future riverboarder? Not a waterfall you want to run on a Riverboard due to the rocks and the amount of neck injuries that have happened. The leg is healed and I have been boarding a few times since. Sounds like you have a hell of a trip planned. If you are ever up for skiing/ snowboarding give me a call. Maybe some winter riverboarding?

Usually Beech or Sugar. I am going to be at Sugar this weekend. Anytime you want to go give me a call. In regards to the winterboarding all of the rivers I like to run are going with the amount of rain we have had recently so I am ready anytime. Wanted to come to Columbia but had the family in.....and they are from around Columbia!

Kevin,
You guys put on quite a show taking on Jacob's and Juicer...my kayak expert friends are pretty impressed and I am starting to get several of them interested in riverboarding!!! I have not been riverboarding yet because I decided to take a two month road trip all over the northwest. If you know anyone that I can meet up with let me know! I am saving my money to get into airboarding and then riverboard next spring. Nice to meet you...hope to get back to NC soon.
