Event Description

Come riverboard and learn from Face Level riverboarders Kevin Yount & Alicia Monahan this year at GauleyFest!

WHAT: Riverboarding get-together trips on the Upper & Lower Gauley and New River.
WHEN: Friday at 9AM (Lower Gauley - big water, but slightly easier than the Upper, with 3 distinct play spots!)
Saturday at 8AM (New River Gorge, before the riverboarding demos)
Sunday time TBD (Upper Gauley, the granddaddy of East Coast whitewater and one of the most awesome Class IV / V riverboarding experiences you'll ever have!)
WHERE: Gauley and New Rivers. Stop by the Canaan Valley Ski Resort / Face Level Industries booth at the festival center for more information!
WHO: Intermediate to experienced riverboarders
WHAT TO BRING: Your riverboard and gear. Stop by the booth and inquire about borrowing gear for any of the sessions.

If you've ever riverboarded on the Gauley or New rivers, you know what a pulse-pounding chaotic mass of whitewater you're in for during these riverboarding sessions. And if you haven't, but you're comfortable in big Class III and IV whitewater, you do not want to miss out on these riverboarder get-togethers. The GauleyFest weekend is a great time to challenge yourself and take on bigger water with experienced guides and many boats and safety personnel on the river.

You'll be riverboarding with two of Face Level's sponsored riverboarders, Kevin Yount and Alicia Monahan, both of whom have many, many river miles of Gauley and New under their boards, at all sorts of crazy levels! They'll help you pick the best lines, make your way through the rapids, and help you collect your thoughts (and your gear, if needed) at the bottom of the rapids!

GauleyFest is the world's biggest whitewater festival for a reason, so make sure you are there with your riverboard and gear for a great wet time!

Just to let you know on Sunday, we hope to have a raft for the Upper if anyone would like to utilize it for rapids they don't feel comfortable on. Most are easy portages, though one or two are difficult or long to portage. Additionally, just wanted to let everyone know that I can accommodate different preferences; For instance on Pure Screaming Hell on the Lower Gauley, I have a clean green highway line that runs between Purgatory and Hell Hole and avoids them both for those that don't want that kind of action, then I'll walk back up for a surf of Hell Hole. Additionally, at Pillow Rock on the Upper, I run the Hero line for the entance (because it's easier than the ferry from river right), then skirt between the splat off of the Pillow and Volkswagon rock, then I can walk back up and anyone who wants to try to hit the "flying squirrel auto boof" over Volkswagon (if it's at a level that is covering the rock), can follow my line. I also run a pretty conservative line at Sweet's Falls (where it's just a slide) and far enough right to stay out of the Box Canyon and Poop Chute below. All that to say that we can run the relatively safer lines for those that want to, and the carnage hounds can follow me on a second run of those select rapids.

If you think you might need an additional board for the demos, I can bring an inflatable. Just let me know by the 16th so I can pack accordingly. I'll be bringing my Kern in any case.

I think we're good Rochelle. I actually have one more board than I have helmets/pfds for.

If you're on the East Coast below the Mason Dixon line, close to it, or coming into the area to board, connect with other boarders. For riverboardering, airboarding at Canaan, and whatever else you do at face level. Mid-Atlantics are welcome too.

Kind of related, has anyone seen one of these... http://2imagine.net/blogger2009/rapidfire2.html What I like about them is their ability to ride rivers when they are far too low to riverboard. I do not own one (yet) but I have been looking at the…

I don't know how often you get this out west.. but in the midwest everyone seems to think stand up paddleboards are riverboards.  I constantly have to correct misperceptions about what a riverboard is.   I don't know how much of that is our sport ju…

I saw part of the movie premier "Haymakers" http://www.kayaksession.com/video186.php this weekend in Hood River and they showed the video footage of this. Turns out the kayaker I was with helped film. The lead-in is a maybe 4' wide slide.
